Secrets Of Success

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

talent simulatorI’m going to give you the secrets of success. As I tell my students, this may be the most important advice you ever receive. Sure, I still have goals to achieve - but I’ve reached some and am confident you’ll find this post helpful. It was inspired by Tuesday’s event in Nashville, where my band won regionals in the Shure SM58 Give It Voice Tour:

Two bits of wisdom – well, one biggie in two parts. #1: Talent is code for strong work ethic. There is no substitute. The FX pedal shown here does not exist. You have complete control over your talent level. People often think of talent as being assigned by G-d, but it’s time and effort. Every athlete is born with the same muscle and skeleton structure. Every guitarist had to learn how to play at some point. When I began singing, I was horrible. Like, really bad. I worked on it. I got better. On Tuesday, a gentleman from Shure said I had “an amazing voice” (they make microphones). Look at Larry Bird, who was probably told as a kid that he could never play pro basketball due to his height. Work hard, practice, improve your game and you can achieve any goal. You may have to work harder than anyone else – not everyone has the same hill to climb – but you’ll reach the top eventually. Which brings us to #2, the formula for distance: Time x Effort = Distance.

The harder you work, the less time it will take to reach your destination. If you only practice once a week, it will take you seven times longer to [play guitar well] than your classmate who practices daily. Sometimes my students are discouraged by this part; they want that Talent Simulator. I think it’s because American pop culture encourages quick fixes – microwaves, magic diet pills (or liposuction), tanning salons … I’m sure there are better examples but you see my point.

The harder you work, the farther you will go in the same amount of time. Rat Race? No worries when you are working harder than your competition; you will go farther. The only risk is burning out. Recall the astronomical metaphor commonly heard when famous people die young, “the brightest stars burn fastest.” This may be true, but with moderation you can avoid becoming a burnout. Moderation is key. Everyone has different limits, everyone has different struggles. Maybe the tools you need are not available? Maybe you have it harder than the next person. But maybe you can work a little harder and focus more on what really needs to be done to achieve your goal(s).

Nick and The Grooves

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

As many of you know, we’ve been trying to find a good band name for a long time. A very long time. I think we may have stumbled upon it. I can not take credit, because it was not my idea, but I’m going with it … as they say at weddings, “If there is anyone who has anything to say against [this] let them speak now or forever hold their peace.” haha! Actually the idea came from a student at UGA by the name of Austin, who approached us before our set last night at Rye Bar (in Athens, GA for the annual UGA vs. GA TECH football game!). Austin asked many questions and propsed “The Groovers” to which I replied, “The Grooves!” Please feel free to add comments (or suggestions) but know that we are all excited about this prospect.

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

Two songs from Year Of The Ox art currently charting at Ourstage.com, a popular music community.

Collusion Collision” broke into the Top 20 on the Jazz chart at #19, and has now climbed up to #18. We are very excited at the prospect of a Top 10 slot by the end of November!

Meanwhile on the Funk chart, “Foolin’ Yourself” remains stagnant at #67.  We need your help!  Please go to Ourstage.com and give these songs three thumbs up!!!  If you don’t already have a profile it is incredibly easy to set up (and free, naturally).

TMJ Announces Chanukah Show in Boca

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Boca Raton, Florida

Yes, that’s right! Ladies and gentlemen, The Moody Jews will descend upon Boca Raton, FL this December for a very special Chanukah concert. Why so special? Well, it’s the first TMJ concert since 2008 and is no longer your zeide’s sing-a-long … The 90-minute set consists of all-original music which we have worked, re-worked and fine-tuned to Rock perfection – except for the second-to-last song, “Light One Candle” (after all, it is Chanukah).

We’ve been practicing our tuchas off to bring an outstanding, world-class Rock show to the good folks of southern Florida and they won’t be disappointed.

The venue is B’nai Torah Congregation and tickets are on sale now. Contact information (for the synagogue) is available on the Tour page under the “Info” column – just click “view more info.”

GSPA ‘09 was “Most Successful Conference Yet”

Monday, October 5th, 2009

I had the pleasure of returning to GSPA this year as their sole live performer / entertainment. I was very excited, having played the conference in 2007. The University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism hosts the Georgia Scholastic Press Association annually, in the Tate Student Center on UGA’s main campus.

Our trip to Athens was uneventful, as usual (hwy 316 can put you to sleep!) but the renovations to the Tate Student Center were eye-opening. It looked a million times more attractive than when I attended [school]. We set up our gear promptly, assisted by wonderful staff (thanks Karen!) and an intern from UGA’s Music Business program.

During the concert some journalism students snapped photos and took notes, then we did a Q&A session!  An excellent article – written by the students – sums up the conference (click here to read the article).
